New Photos

Journal Entry: Fri May 9, 2008, 12:30 PM
You all might have noticed the new horse pictures here. My friend got a new horse, a real beauty, and also very photogenic! So she will be represented here, including her stable mates. All can be very spectacular to photograph. Be prepared for many new horse shots.

And more news. Recently I made a short trip to Barcelona. A beautiful city with impressive architecture and unique people. Naturally, I took my camera with me. And trust me, a lot of pictures were taken! So subjects will differ much from my predominantly animal shots. From now on interesting people and beautiful buildings will also be a part of this gallery.
I hope all of you can appreciate this change, I cant resist uploading my Barcelona photos!

Comments are always appreciated by me and will be answered but it may take a while.
Thank you!

It was about the area use of Konik horses in a nature reserve in Latvia. :) Three social groups were let loose there a few years ago, but no real research had been done. So no-one knew how they used the area. And now they do. :D

they are beautiful animals but thats very good that they are trying to keep them wild- for life. They have a good reason for it too!

Thats right, foals can not be adopted. Theyare purely bred for conservation purposes. The objective in Holland and many other european countries is to let people think of the breed as wild animals, like deer. When you would sell them as pet horses, people loose that and see the wild ones as pet horses too. That creates conflict when they see a skinny or sick one in the wild. The public will demand it gets taken to a vet and pamperd like a riding horse. They dont see them as wild animals anymore.

But in Poland the breed is still uses as riding horse and cart horse. So you could get a domesticated Konik foal there!

so they stay wild, there is no program where people can take young ones?

Thats very interesting!

It depends on the area they are in. In large areas they are free to breed and stay there. In smaller areas they are also free to breed, but some horses will be rehomed in other reserves to prevent overcrowding. So they do not get shot when there are too many in a reserve. Harsh winters, flooding, disease etc does provide for a natural population control.

Sometimes a small reserve can handle only a small number of horses. A stallion band can be homed there, because (obviously) they do not breed.

i figured.

Is there a population control on these herds? or are they free to all be born and live out their days in the wild?

thanks
